Zion Shuttle Stop

Date

I was asked to do a simple redesign for the shuttle stop maps that are used for all the stops in Zion and the town of Springdale. This was needed as the park wanted to communicate additional information that was not on the original maps, and the original maps were very sun-baked and hard to read. The new information that was to be included were things such as walking distance and time, and new amenities that have been added since the original installation.

I was very fortunate that the park kept the original design drawings, and I was able to reverse engineer the signs from that documentation, which saved me a lot of time. I took the original color scheme used on the old shuttle stop maps and signage to use as a starting point. I added a darker shade of green and orange where the information for walking distance and time went for easier readability and 508 compliance.

Then I had to address the layout; there was a lot of additional information to be added and not a whole lot of space. I was able to neatly organize all the new information and still keep it organized in the way I wanted it to be. Legibility was a big concern, so I made sure no font was smaller than 9 pt anywhere on any of these maps.

All in all, this was a fairly simple but much-needed update. I often see people reading the walking distances and times on these, and knowing how much visitors hate to read in national parks shows me I accomplished my mission for these.
